The author of Hebrews challenges his Jewish readers to be weaned from the milk of the Word and go on to solid food which will produce maturity. He tells them why: because if true believers in Christ should fall away from Him, they cannot be renewed to repentance and will suffer the eternal consequences of this. It is indeed a stern warning. Going on to maturity will help prevent this. We must be people of the Word to stand strong to the end, loving and living by its truths.
